Regional Director – Europe
Prof. Peter Heistermann is a surgeon, specialising in general, visceral and vascular surgery. He studied at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne from 1978 to 1984, obtaining his doctorate in 1987. Since 2016, Prof Heistermann ist he Head of the Physician Assistance BSc programme at the Fliedner University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf, Germany. The training is being developed according to the model of ‘Entrustable professional activities – EPA’.
His motivation is based on decades of commitment to the training of medical students and surgical assistant professions, as well as the firm belief that the professional profile of the Physician Assistant can make a significant contribution to ensuring quality in patient care in Germany, given the dramatic shortage of healthcare personnel.
In 2018, Prof. Heistermann founded the German University Association of Physician Assistants (DHPA e.V.) as an independent academic association to which all universities in Germany with PA degree programmes voluntarily belong. DHPA is developing the criteria for the PA degree programmes.
In 2019, together with colleagues from the Netherlands and other European and UK countries, he founded the European Network of PA Educators (ENPAE) as a forum for exchanging ideas for the training of PAs and providing mutual support in developments in the respective countries. ENPAE is the European Chapter to IAPAE and will work together through a steering committee to support the growth of PA education and training in Europe and the United Kingdom.
