The Deutscher Hochschulverband Physician Assistant (DHPA) has released a special publication, “20 Years of Physician Assistant Studies in Germany,” marking two decades of remarkable growth and professional advancement.
Since the launch of the first PA bachelor’s program in 2005, Germany’s Physician Assistant profession has expanded to 26 universities with over 5,000 students enrolled nationwide. The DHPA has been instrumental in establishing academic standards, promoting inter-university
collaboration, and introducing a national voluntary certification examination to ensure consistency and quality across programs.
The commemorative publication highlights the profession’s journey — from its early development to its growing recognition as a vital component of Germany’s healthcare workforce. It also showcases milestones such as the country’s first Master’s program (2021) and increasing integration of PAs into both hospital and community healthcare settings.
On behalf of the global PA education community, the International Academy of Physician Associate Educators (IAPAE) congratulates DHPA and the German PA community for two decades of leadership, innovation, and commitment to patient-centered care.
