The General Medical Council (GMC) is set to begin regulating physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) starting December 13, 2024. This marks a significant step in ensuring that these healthcare professionals meet established standards of education and training. Registration for PAs and AAs will open on December 16, 2024, with an initial group receiving invitations to apply before the end of the month. All current PAs and AAs on voluntary registers will have received invitations by the end of January 2025.
In the UK, there are approximately 5,000 PAs and 200 AAs. The GMC has announced that beginning in December 2026, it will be an offence for any individual to practice as a PA or AA without being registered. This regulatory framework aims to enhance accountability and assure patients, employers, and colleagues that these professionals have the necessary qualifications and can be held accountable for their practice.
GMC Chief Executive Charlie Massey expressed enthusiasm for this new regulatory phase, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on patient care. He noted that many PAs and AAs work collaboratively with doctors to provide excellent care. With the introduction of formal regulation, patients and the healthcare system can expect a higher standard of service, as well as a clear mechanism for addressing serious concerns about professional conduct.
IAPAE extends CONGRATULATIONS and wishes much success to the UK PAs. This is a moment to reflect, gain recognition, and continue the very good work of global PA educators and clinical practitioners. Through our quality education, clinical practice, collaborative and supportive global efforts; PAs and comparables around the world will continue to gain registration.
We celebrate with you!
