Ontario Announces Major Expansion of Physician Assistant Training Seats

The International Academy of Physician Associate Educators (IAPAE) welcomes a significant announcement from the Government of Ontario, Canada, confirming the expansion of Physician Assistant (PA) education as part of a major investment in primary care workforce development.

Ontario’s Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones, has announced a plan to add up to 150 new Physician Assistant student training seats at Ontario universities. This expansion forms part of Ontario’s $2.1 billion Primary Care Action Plan, aimed at ensuring that every resident in the province is connected to a primary care provider by 2029.

Investment in the Primary Care Workforce

The announcement includes $30 million to expand primary care teams across Ontario with the addition of nearly 1,800 healthcare professionals across the system. Beginning in 2026–27, $16 million will be dedicated specifically to funding up to 150 new PA student education seats. This investment reflects the growing recognition of Physician Assistants as essential contributors to high-performing, team-based healthcare systems.

Recognition of the PA Profession

The Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA) welcomed the announcement with the CAPA President Ryan Bennett quoted in the official government release:

“The Canadian Association of Physician Assistants is thrilled with the Ontario government’s continued investment in the Physician Assistant profession. This expansion comes at a critical time for Ontario’s healthcare system. Adding 150 new Physician Assistant training seats will help grow the pool of highly qualified healthcare providers needed to support patients and care teams across the province. Physician Assistants are essential members of healthcare teams, improving efficiency and increasing access to timely, high-quality care… PAs are part of the solution—and Ontario deserves PAs.”

CAPA has indicated it will continue working closely with the Ontario government and the Primary Care Action Team to ensure full integration of PAs within Ontario’s evolving healthcare strategy.

Global Significance for PA Education

From an international perspective, this development signals several important trends, including continued government-level recognition of PA education, strategic workforce expansion aligned with primary care reform, direct investment in PA training capacity to address access-to-care challenges and strengthening of team-based care models.

As PA/PA-Analogue education continues to grow globally, Ontario’s investment reinforces the importance of structured educational expansion linked directly to workforce planning and health system needs. For IAPAE members and partner institutions worldwide, this announcement serves as an example of how sustained advocacy, policy engagement, and educational capacity-building can shape national workforce strategy.

IAPAE Perspective

IAPAE acknowledges and congratulates the Canadian PA community and CAPA for their continued leadership and advocacy efforts. Developments such as this highlight the critical role that PA educators, professional bodies, and policymakers play in strengthening primary care systems through sustainable educational expansion.

Through the IAPAE News and Updates, we will continue to monitor and share international developments that advance PA education and workforce integration globally.
